Ahiflower® Oil
Ahiflower oil, extracted from the seeds of the Buglossoides arvensis plant, offers a vegan-friendly and sustainably sourced option for enhancing essential fatty acid levels and reducing pro-inflammatory states. Research indicates that Ahiflower, named for its plant-based omega-rich profile similar to that of fatty fish like Ahi tuna, provides the most comprehensive and balanced omega fatty acid profile available from a non-genetically modified botanical source.
Why Ahiflower® Oil?
Ahiflower oil contains the highest levels of omega-3 stearidonic acid (SDA) available, along with naturally occurring omega-6 gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) not present in marine or algal omega-3 sources. The SDA in Ahiflower oil is efficiently converted in the body into omega-3 EPA, the same omega-3 found in fish and krill oils, without the fishy aftertaste or burps. A 2015 human clinical trial demonstrated that Ahiflower oil converts to omega-3 EPA up to four times more effectively than flaxseed oil. Ahiflower offers a full-spectrum omega fatty acid supplement.
With Ahiflower supplementation, LPS-stimulated macrophages showed a 45% increase in interleukin-10 (IL-10) expression compared to baseline levels (p<0.05). IL-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine produced by M2 immunosuppressive monocyte/macrophages, is one of the body’s natural mechanisms for reducing excess inflammation.
A recent study on omega-3 metabolism in mice, the first to compare pure marine DHA with Ahiflower, offers preliminary evidence that Ahiflower oil, despite having no DHA, may effectively produce DHA in tissues where mammals naturally synthesize, store, or utilize it from plant-based omega-3 precursors. This process supports functions related to cell membranes, the immune system, and neurotransmitters.
